Puerto Rico Vamonos Update: January 7, 2020

Earlier this morning, a magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck the southern area of Puerto Rico near the town of Guanica. Our office, crisis team, and staff were immediately notified and initiated our crisis protocol. We are alert. Our groups on the island are safe and have been moved away from the area near the epicenter in southern Puerto Rico for the time being as a precautionary method.

The safety of our travelers is paramount to us. As of today, there is no damage at all reported in any of our partner hotels, main attractions, highways, or venues. Our number one priority continues to be to keep the group safe, together, and calm.

Puerto Rico is extremely well-built for earthquakes. The authorities expect the possibility of small frequent aftershocks throughout this week. All U.S. standard government agencies are in place to make sure there’s order and safety. There is no current tsunami warning or travel alert nor any indication that travelers need to evacuate hotels or affected cities. All airports, ports of entry, and main attractions in northern Puerto Rico remain open and undamaged.

We are undertaking necessary measures to provide clear and concise information to people regarding their travel and accommodation plans. The Government and other key agencies such as Discover Puerto Rico and the Tourism Company are being briefed on the situation and further details of any interim tourism measures will be released as soon as they become available.

We have well-developed contingency plans to deal with these types of incidents and will offer every possible assistance to travelers currently in Puerto Rico. Visitors can be reassured that authorities are doing everything possible to ensure safety and minimize disruption to travel plans in the region.
